January
In math class, our love for multiplication grows enormously! The students in our class practiced memorizing their multiplication facts. From the beginning of the month, the students had a habit of using their fingers to calculate and find the answer to their multiplications. We established a new rule in our class starting the first week of January which the students could not use their fingers to calculate their multiplication except for multiplication facts starting with 9. With our new rule, our students abruptly improved with their mental math!
On Fridays, the students started taking have one digit by one digit multiplication quizzes. Last week, we had a multiplication tournament using a virtual flashcards, and the students were really competitive against each other which was good to see that they strove to memorize their multiplication facts! We also learned how to calculate the 4 digit or more by 1 digit multiplication, and 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication. In next month, we will be learning about division!

December
We finished with place value unit in the month of November. We’re currently learning addition and subtraction with 5 or more digits. We will be moving to learning division next month! It is a right time for your child to do the winter shopping for you this month as your child knows how to write the number in written form (i.e. writing checks!), knows how to round up to the certain place value (i.e. estimating the prices of presents!), adding up the big numbers (i.e adding the total of the spendings of the gifts!), and subtracting the big numbers (i.e. returning the gifts back to the store and knowing the total of the money back!). You are settled for the winter presents by empowering your child to do the shopping! :) Have a great holiday!
September & October
We started our school year with multiplication! I emphasized to the students that they would always use multiplication not only in the math class, but in restaurants, stores, post office, etc. After understanding the importance of multiplication, the students showed enthusiasm with multiplication. We practiced memorizing the multiplication facts through many engaging games such as multiplication checkers, tic tac toe, war, and baseball games. Encourage your child to bring the binder of all the multiplication games home, I guarantee your child will be thrilled to be given a chance to beat you in these multiplication games! After multiplication, we started our unit in place value. We learned how to write the numbers into word form. We’re currently learning how to round up to the hundred thousands.
